Why is My Water This Colour?

When you turn on your tap does your water have a yellowish tint? If it does, you are not alone. There are many factors that could cause your water to not be as clean and clear as you would like it to be.

Iron

Red Water Iron is a common element found in water sources in certain areas of Ontario. If your water has high levels of red iron, the water coming out of your tap will be brown, rusty colour and your water may have a metallic taste.

Clear Water Iron is not visible but, over time, as the iron is exposed to air and starts to oxidize, you will start to see pink stains on your bathroom fixtures. Both forms of iron can build up inside your pipes and fixtures, causing clogs.

Water Depot offers several Iron Removal filters, including the Iron Slayer. This system uses air injection technology to reduce iron levels safely and effectively, without the addition of any chemicals.

Organic Materials

Tannins are organic materials that are the result of decaying vegetation and debris. Tannins, along with sediment, sand, and silt found in lake and well water, can make their way into your water supply, causing your water to change colour. These organic materials affect the colour, taste, and clarity of your water, resulting in water that you may not be comfortable drinking, cooking with, or bathing in.

If you have, or are considering, an Ultraviolet System, tannins and sediment must be removed prior to the water entering your system as they can cause harm to equipment and reduce the effectiveness of your system. In particular, tannins may build up on the UV sleeve rendering the lamp useless against disinfection.

Water Depot pre-filters trap sediment, sand, and silt, reducing odour, bad taste, cloudiness and more, allowing your water treatment system to work at its most effective.
