How Often Should I Have My Rural Water Tested?

If a well or lake is your primary source of drinking water for your home it is important to have it tested regularly to ensure that it is clean, clear, and free of contaminants.

Well water is untreated water from a ground source that absorbs a little bit of everything it comes in contact with. It will dissolve minerals found in soil and rocks, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and limestone and carry these into your home’s water supply. Because of this, most well water is hard and contains Iron, which can be treated with the addition of a water softener and possibly an iron filter.

Well water and Surface water (from a Lake) can be susceptible to other, potentially more harmful, contaminants that it may encounter along its path. These may include runoff from farmers’ fields, acid rain, wildlife, or decaying organic materials and will normally require further water treatment.

At your request, Public Health Ontario will test your well water for Coliforms and E. coli, but will not test for other contaminants, such as chemicals and other microorganisms that could compromise your water quality.

Water Depot recommends having your well water tested at the beginning of each season, this will help to identify seasonal fluctuations in your water quality, (such as spring runoff), which may affect your drinking water. This may dictate that your water will need to have further treatment and increased Preventative Maintenance frequencies during certain times of the year.

Having a qualified Water Depot water treatment expert perform an in-home water test will determine the quality of your well water and provide you with a treatment plan that will ensure you are providing your family with clean, clear water throughout every season.
